Earlier this morning, members of the FCC’s Consumer Advisory Committee honored Commissioner Clyburn with a resolution recognizing her achievements during her time as Acting Chair. The resolution was presented to her as a framed certificate.
Drafted by the “Universal Service Working Group,”–which includes MAG-Net members and allies Center for Media Justice, Media Literacy Project, Benton Foundation and National Consumer Law Center—the resolution reads as follows:
Resolution of Commendation FCC Consumer Advisory Committee
Whereas Commissioner Mignon Clyburn took the occasion of her 6-month tenure as Acting Chairwoman of the Federal Communications Commission to work with Commissioners Jessica Rosenworcel and Ajit Pai to:
Remove the barrier that exorbitant telephone rates posed for many families of the incarcerated to maintain contact with their loved ones, and thus, help reduce the rate of recidivism[1]
Address privacy concerns regarding mobile devices by clarifying consumer rights under existing laws that require providers to safeguard personal information[2]
Uphold the necessity to continue the Lifeline program of the Universal Service Fund in the face of relentless attacks, stating that “Without this program, approximately millions of low-income families would have to choose between feeding their children or going without a dial tone that potentially could save their lives, and put them on a better economic path.”[3]
Revitalize the E-rate program of the Universal Service Fund by ensuring that schools and libraries have the infrastructure and capacity to meet 21st century educational needs[4], and,
Take important next steps in the FCC’s examination of broadcast diversity issues by undertaking the first study of the Hispanic television market, including programming and viewing patterns, and by initiating a field test of the research design model created for the Multi-Market Study of Critical Information Needs[5],
Therefore, the Consumer Advisory Committee of the Federal Communications Commission hereby commends and thanks Commissioner Clyburn for her exemplary leadership on behalf of all consumers, especially those in greatest need.
