As protesters take the streets to protest police violence across the country, activists raise the question: why not abolish prisons altogether?
In the last two weeks, we’ve seen a huge shift in popular attitudes toward policing. If anybody talked about defunding police a month ago, that just is like madness, and now it’s being put on the agenda of major cities. We should be spending money on programs that keep people out of prisons and provide them with opportunities.
