The Media Literacy Project (MLP) is based in New Mexico and has been around for nearly 20 years as a nationally recognized leader in media literacy resources and education. Our mission is to advance education and advocacy for media justice – we envision a world where EVERYONE has affordable access to media tools to ensure self-determination and a healthy media landscape.
MLP was also one of the first member-organizations to join MAG-Net. For us, it was and continues to be important for New Mexico to be part of a larger group nationwide that aligns with ending racism and poverty through media justice. MAG-Net provides the leadership and technical support as well as the policy analysis that lends itself to build stronger organizations.
The most recent fight that we've taken on is against two pieces of active legislation: the "Stop Online Piracy Act" and the "Protect IP Act" (SOPA and PIPA). We stand shoulder to shoulder with our coalition partners in MAG-Net because we know that the passage of these acts will fundamentally change the Internet and limit the openness and creativity that have fostered social and economic inclusion for traditionally disenfranchised communities. As our strategic communications director Hakim Bellamy says, we also know that the most innovative and democratic model for communication and artistic distribution ever created is the Internet. As such, it is crucial that we work with other grassroots organizations across the country to preserve the Internet as a creative commons and space for the 100% – not just the 1%ers.
