Register for US Social Forum: Media Justice Movement Assembly in Detroit, MI on Eventbrite

On Tuesday June 2, and June 3, 2010, CMJ hosted a two digital dialogs with some core allies to get ready for the US Social Forum.

The first call brought together an initial group of communications organizers and strategists to landscape social movement narratives and goals. (There were some technical difficulties that didn’t allow for a few key leaders to get on the call – Makani Themba-Nixon and Charlotte Ryan, for example.) I think I can speak for the group and say that we are excited for this historic gathering and invite our allies and friends to continue this process with us.

Special thanks to everyone who was on this initial call:

Joseph Phelan, Miami Worker Center and The Shop
Doyle Canning and Patrick Reinsborough, smartMeme
Malkia Cyril, Karlos Gauna Schmieder, amalia deloney and Lisa Jervis, CMJ
Sangita Nayak, Consultant, Progressive Communicators Network
Allison Conyers, Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth, Progressive Communicator’s Network
Silky Shaw, Detention Watch Network
Jen Soriano, Grassroots Global Justice Alliance
George Lujan, SouthWest Organizing Project
Shadi Rahimi, Malachi Garza, Community Justice Network for Youth
Adele Nieves, USSF

One of the early outcomes of this process is an idea to create a “justice communications working group” to strategize, analyze and monitor movement narratives and frames.

We’re asking all our allies and friends to join us in this process to continue build the justice communications field and to integrate collaborative, creative, and strategic storytelling as a core movement building strategy for political, cultural, and social change.

The second call brought together an initial group of grassroots and beltway media justice organizers and advocates to landscape the media policy terrain and social justice goals as they relate to media policy.

Special thanks to everyone who was on this initial call:

Carlos Pareja, People’s Production House
Rashmi Rangnath, Public Knowledge
Brittny Saunders, Center for Social Inclusion
Steven Renderos, Main Street Project
Amalia Deloney, Karlos Gauna Schmieder, Center for Media Justice
Joseph Torres, Misty Perez Truedson, Free Press
Deanne Cuellar, Media Justice League
Beth McConnell, Chance Williams, Media and Democracy Coalition
Tracy Rosenberg, Media Alliance
James Losey, New America Foundation
Edyael Casaperalta, Rural Strategies
Andrea Quijada, Media Literacy Project
Jessica Guerrero, Esperanza Center
Sasha Costanza,

One of the early takeaways from this process has been just how much media consolidation and ISP control over the pipes we use to communicate impact social movement’s narrative power.

We’re asking all our friends and allies to join us in this process to continue build the media justice sector and define the media justice policy and organizing framework needed to produce the structural change and media platforms movement goals demand.
