Today The Media Action Grassroots Network (MAG-Net) announced the addition of three new anchor-members. The Urbana Champaign Independent Media Center will anchor the Downstate Illinois Chapter- MAG-Net also has a Chicago Chapter in the state. Highlander Research & Education Center and Art is Change will serve as co-anchors of the Southeast Regional Chapter. The addition of these three anchors expands the fast growing network of grassroots community organizations working across the country for media change to end poverty, eliminate racism, and ensure human rights.
"We are excited and proud to add anchor sites in Southern Illinois, Georgia, and Tennessee, says Betty Yu, Network Manager for MAG-Net. "These anchors will lead and coordinate organizations in their area to move a regional-to-national agenda for media change that uplifts America's poor, rural, and communities of color."
Carol Ammons, Program Director of the Urbana Champaign Independent Media Center says "we're excited to transfer useful information to other MAG-Net members, share those 'best practices' that have been central to our growth and sustainability, as well as develop organizational mentorship relations with other MAG-Net members who have developed programming for disenfranchised communities."
Based in New Market, Tennessee, the Highlander Research and Education Center helps grassroots leaders create the tools necessary for building broad-based movements for change. "We at the Highlander Center are proud to not only be a gathering place, but a support base, to co-anchor the MAG-Net Southeast Chapter with Art is Change," Elandria Williams, Educational Consultant for Highlander says about joining MAG-Net. "Media Justice is an essential human right and that human right must extend to all of us including communities of color and poor communities in the rural South and Appalachia."
In Atlanta, Georgia, Art is Change has cultivated a network of artists, creative thinkers and organizations leveraging art and creative practice for cultural transformation. Sage Crump, Managing Director says "Art Is Change is excited and honored to be a co-anchor MAG-Net in the Southeast. Historically, this country has been greatly shifted by the voices and organizing of those in this region. It is time to stop segregating the media justice conversation, recognize the interconnectedness of media to all social justice movements and ingrain this into our conversations and actions."
