Movements for civil and human rights face extraordinary challenges organizing in a digital age. From the FBI’s surveillance of Black activists to social media spying by local law enforcement, we need immediate and effective surveillance self-defense strategies. But with an overwhelming amount of apps and software available, we also need clear information about digital security tools by and for communities of color that actually keep us safe.

Electronic Monitoring Hotspot Map

MediaJustice’s Challenging E-Carceration project has been researching national trends and local struggles involving electronic monitoring (EM) and other punitive technologies for several years. This map highlights our findings. Hover and click on states for information on how e-carceration is being implemented there, and how people are fighting to abolish it. It includes a web-based clearinghouse of the most up-to-date and useful information about protecting your devices and data—whether on the Internet, through cell phone communications, or in your home or office.
